WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT?
Best Time to Visit: October to March
Why:
- Pleasant Climate: Comfortable temperatures ranging approximately between 18°C to 30°C make this period ideal for sightseeing, backwater cruises, hill station visits, wildlife experiences, beach relaxation, and scenic road journeys across Kerala and South India.
- Hill Station Beauty: Destinations like Munnar offer cool weather, misty tea plantations, clear mountain views, and refreshing landscapes during these months.
- Backwater & Beach Experiences: The calm weather enhances houseboat stays in Alleppey and Kumarakom, while coastal destinations like Varkala, Kanyakumari, and Poovar are perfect for sunsets, beach walks, and outdoor activities.
- Wildlife & Nature: Thekkady and Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary offer excellent opportunities for boat safaris, nature walks, and spice plantation visits after the monsoon season.
- Festivals & Cultural Experiences: This season also features Kerala’s vibrant cultural atmosphere, traditional performances, temple festivals, Christmas celebrations, and New Year festivities.
Off Season: April to September
What to Expect:
- April to June (Summer): Temperatures become warmer and more humid, especially in coastal regions like Kochi and Trivandrum. However, hill stations such as Munnar remain comparatively cooler and pleasant. This is also a quieter travel season with fewer crowds.
- July to September (Monsoon): Kerala transforms into a lush green paradise with dramatic waterfalls, mist-covered hills, and rejuvenated backwaters. Athirapally Waterfalls appear especially spectacular during this period. Heavy rainfall may occasionally affect sightseeing schedules, road travel, and beach activities, but it is considered the best season for Ayurveda and wellness retreats.
Note:
- Monsoon season offers exceptional natural beauty and photography opportunities, especially in Athirapally, Munnar, and the Kerala backwaters.
- December and January are peak tourist months, so advance booking for hotels and houseboats is highly recommended.
- The Onam Festival (usually August–September) showcases Kerala’s rich traditions, floral decorations, boat races, and cultural celebrations.
